The Phantom Of The Opera (Movie Review)

Nominated for 3 Academy Awards and 3 Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, The Phantom Of The Opera was one of the most talked about movies of 2004. Taking the smash commercial success of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage production to the big screen is no easy task, but long-time Hollywood director Joel Schumacher is more than able to get the job done. He takes an otherwise poorly written screenplay (minus the awe of a live performance no less) and manages to thrill the audience with the visual aspects of a film chiefly intended to rehash a successful stage musical. The costumes and set are simply magnificent, and Art Director John Fenner (Raiders Of The Lost Ark) helps Schumacher put together a fabulous production that’s well worth a movie-goer’s time…

The Phantom Of The Opera centers around a mysterious character who dwells underneath the Paris Opera House, imbibing himself on the music that emanates from above. Known as The Phantom (Gerard Butler), he wears a half-mask to cover the hideous facial scars that have plagued him since birth. A musical genius, the phantom is infatuated with the opera, and when he falls in love with the voice of a young chorus girl named Christine (Emmy Rossum – The Day After Tomorrow (2004), Mystic River (2003)), this love of the opera morphs into an outright obsession. The phantom provides Christine with one-on-one voice lessons, while during his spare time, he terrorizes the opera house in an effort to land his protégé the opera’s leading role. When Christine finally rises to that position, however, she is reunited with childhood friend Raul (Patrick Wilson), and the two begin a torrid love affair. Vengeful and jealous, the phantom kidnaps Christine and holds her prisoner in his underground lair, and Raul is the only one who can save her…

Onscreen, The Phantom Of The Opera is weak by the standards of a traditional film. The cast does its best to make the most of a screenplay peppered with rigid dialogue – a script designed to sell “the music of the night”. The supposed magnetism between Christine and Raul is non-existent and not really believable. As such, the audience is forced into believing that the phantom (who, by contrast, is quite charismatic in this rendition) would end up playing second fiddle to a man who makes Al Gore seem animated. Overall, however, other aspects of the film make up for this flaw…

Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1925 novel of the same name, The Phantom Of The Opera loses much of its original edge given the phantom’s transformation from a frightening and mangled lunatic to a watered down half-scarred/half-babe-magnet figure complete with likeable characteristics. But inevitably, that’s the mark of an enduring franchise – its malleability in the realm of numerous genres and the public’s willingness to embrace such changes. But arguably, the small changes in the original novel’s plot were necessary to achieve Lloyd Webber’s goal of a melodramatic and stirring Broadway musical boasting mass commercial appeal. In a year in which the Oscar nominations were mostly dominated by lower-budget, surprise hit films (such as Sideways, Million Dollar Baby, and Finding Neverland), The Phantom Of The Opera holds its own in many aspects (given its pre-production designation as a commercial success). But those who have not seen the stage version are unlikely to be won over to the ranks of the franchise’s numerous fanatics. My advice is to definitely see the film if you’ve ever seen the stage performance or listened regularly to the soundtrack – otherwise, you might be disappointed. After all, no matter how good The Phantom Of The Opera translates to the big screen, there’s a reason musicals are not the dominate genre in Hollywood…

Website Creation Process Introduction

The following is an overview of the web site creation
process
. We will discuss four steps to launching a
successful web site: registering a domain name, choosing a web
hosting service, designing your site, and online marketing.

Let’s start with domain registration, the natural
beginning of the process for building a website. First you need
to choose a domain name. if you haven’t already thought of the
name consider something that will reflect the nature of your
online business. For example, someone wanting to sell flowers
online will naturally choose a name that includes the word
“flowers”. Several rules to follow for choosing an effective
name:

1. It has to describe your business

2. It has to be catchy

3. It has to be easy to remember

4. It should not be too long

5. Avoid using numbers or other ambiguous characters

6. It should sound brand name, one of the kind, the best in the
business.

7. A .com if you’re engaging in a commercial enterprise But if
the name you’re looking for is only available with another
extension a .net. .org, or .us will suffice. Keep in mind that
the name is important but what is going to be vital to the
success of your business is how well it is marketed. We’ll
discuss marketing strategies further along in this lesson.

On to hosting the domain that you have chosen. What kind
of programs will you run on your website? Do you have any
specific ideas about how you would like the layout Have decided
to look? These are an important questions to ask before choosing
a hosting service because some of the applications You might
like to use for your web site They only run on certain
platforms. For instance, There are multitudes of php will only
work if installs on a Server that as php support. Microsoft ASP
on the other hand will only work on a windows server. There are
certainly comparable solutions for the most popular platforms so
if you have some flexibility in your choices you can put more of
your attention on costs.

Something else you want to consider about the hosting package
you is the look and feel of the administrative panel.
This is the backend of your website, where you’ll check site
statistics, perform backups of your website, create new e-mail
addresses set auto responders, managed databases, install new
scripts, customize error handling messages for requests to pages
not located in your website. These features along with the
reputation of your web host the difference in the long run. Not
to worry though, so long as you have your web site stored on
your local computer and perhaps in another remote location,
changing platforms or web hosts is not a problem. You’ve got
your name, you’ve got some space on the world wide web.

Next comes design. You can hire your own designer or you
can build your site on your own. How are your computer skills?
If you’re able to follow some instructions and know the basics
of pointing and clicking you should be able to make do with an
entry level design program. Microsoft front page is in any way
as an extension of the office suite so if you comfortable using
Microsoft office you probably just fine using frontpage. A step
up And industry standard is Macromedia’s DreamWeaver. As a
standalone application for if you wanna work in conjunction with
their of their applications you might want to try Macromedia’s
Studio MX. This flash MX which is quickly taking prominence on
web for multimedia and all purpose website applications.
Personally I think flash along makes the switch to Macromedia
worthwhile. Many of this standard development practices of
yesterday are now being programs using flash. If you see some
moving buttons, twirling menus, or maybe a logo that jumps out
at you, it’s probably done in flash.

Successful online marketing is the results of consistent
and dedicated effort over a period of months or even years. Your
marketing effort will undoubtedly be in spurts with some periods
of more intense required effort and some periods of more
maintenance and quality assurance. That said, on any marketing
campaign for your business, you want to have a clear vision of
who you are marketing to and what results you are trying to
achieve. You will find a particular marketing methods work for
you and your business as you go along. Here a few that have
found useful in marketing online businesses:

1. Friends & Family

2. Site Optimization: choose target and niche keywords
for your metatags and place those keywords in the first
paragraphs of your index page.

3. Pay-Per-Click Advertising: Google Adwords, Yahoo
Overture, Superpages

4. Affiliate Marketing: ClickXchange, Commission
Junction, ClixGalore

5. Blogging: Free blog at blogger.

6. RSS: submit your blog to rss directories like Blog
Directory Submit for wide content distribution

7. Backlinks: the best thing for your online success is
to get top search engine placement. One factor is how many
relevent sites are linking back to yours.

8. Articles: contribute content to article directories with a
link to your website. These articles may get picked up by other
sites and thus be a source of backlinks to your website.

Also two marketing mottos you might want to consider:

1. It’s not necessary to spend money to get your name and
there.

2. It’s easier to stand out if you can find a niche I hope you
found the above information useful.

Good luck on your online adventures!

Getting Your Kid Off The Payroll

Do you have a recent college graduate who is unemployed, or if they are employed, dislikes and maybe even hates their first job? Well, don’t feel bad, because by all estimates, at least half of all recent graduates are either unemployed or underemployed (working a job that doesn’t use either their education or their ambition). It’s difficult deciding who should feel worse, our kids or us.

The children of baby boomers (our kids) are going to college in record numbers. There are more applicants to American universities today than at any time in our country’s history. There are also record numbers of foreign students flocking to American universities taking up a limited number of seats. Our college track and soccer teams have very talented South Americans, our swim teams include world class Australians and the University of Colorado’s entire ski team is European. As a result of this growing imbalance of supply and demand, the price for each college seat continues to rise.

When you and I went to college, the monthly cost was equal to a car payment. Today it is a mortgage! I have three kids all heading to private universities. The average cost of one year of private college is approaching $40,000. State schools are quickly approaching $20,000. Today, it’s not just a diploma, it’s about the “campus experience” with multi-million dollar student centers, laptop computers, cell phones, cars on campus, semesters studying abroad, and semester breaks in the Bahamas. In my next life, I want to come back as one of my kids!

As our children near graduation (in four or more years), we hope that they get what we paid for – a good job with a good future, because we want our kids to be happy and successful. But, what do you get from a college for that $80K – $160K education. Well, you get the right to put “_______ university” on the rear window of your car and the privilege to brag about your child at parties. You get a child who learned a lot about social life, living on their own (financed by you), and a child who hopefully graduates with a degree in their chosen major in four years.

Now what don’t you get for your college tuition? You don’t get a child with a job, and you don’t get any long-term career strategy or guidance. You have to do that yourself. That’s because they don’t teach Career Management in college. They don’t teach you about life, how to decide what job is best for you and how to get the job that is best for you. They don’t teach you how to perform in your job, how to deal with peers or a difficult boss, or how to ask for a new job assignment. They especially don’t teach you how to lead or how to handle the adjustment to the culture of a new organization. They just don’t do any of this stuff. Why? Because they don’t have to. It is a seller’s market and they are the seller.

As the cost of college goes even higher, you will hear about creative job help programs being supported by universities. However, colleges have only so much money for career programs, and it will never be enough to adequately support every student. Let’s face it, after graduation, you are on your own. So, you and your child have to take control of the situation.

If you are one of the millions, yes millions, of baby boomers who has an underemployed and unhappy college graduate, you need not be ashamed. But, you do need to take action. Not the kind of action you may have taken when your child was 12 years old, and you did it for them. You need to help them help themselves. If you want to get your kid off the payroll and on the way to personal satisfaction and happiness, you must do the following 3 things:

1. Let them know you understand their challenge. Hey, despite being a little bit spoiled, your child is undergoing one of the most significant transitions of their life. Without judging them, start having discussions (listening much more than speaking) about the difficulty of leaving the college life and the support community and 4 year predictable life they left behind.

2. Help them help themselves. They must find their own goals and motivation. Encourage them to articulate and gradually commit to short and long term goals that really motivate them. Encourage them to visualize what they want their future to look like. Then ask them to decide how committed they are to achieving their goals.

3. Help them develop a plan of action toward achieving their own independence. Help them develop a plan of action aimed at achieving professional satisfaction and personal independence. There is a host of responsibilities they must accept, but building and gradually executing an action plan is the only way to start.

These 3 steps are meant to be executed over time, but with conviction by both parent and child. You don’t want them being dependent on you forever, and believe me they don’t want to be, either. So work together but start work today.

Smoking and Eye Damage

The chemicals in cigarette smoke (around 4000 of them) get into
the bloodstream of smokers and may induce the damage to the eye.

The chemicals in tobacco smoke can cause inflammation of the
conjunctiva (the thin membrane covering the eye), resulting in
bloodshot, irritated eyes.

In a study of nearly 21,000 U.S. male physicians, spanning an
average of 13.6 years, researchers found a direct link between
smoking and the development of cataracts. The study, known as
Physicians Health Study I, evaluated physicians between the ages
of 40 and 84 who had no prior history of cataracts before 1982.
Participants were asked to complete questionnaires that included
information such as: number of cigarettes smoked daily, age when
they started smoking, and their age if they stopped smoking.
Each participant received annual eye exams and were required to
report the results to the study investigators. The participants’
ophthalmologists and optometrists confirmed the results.

Smoking has also been linked to eye diseases such as age-related
macular degeneration. The causes of macular degeneration are not
completely understood, but smoking is believed to be the main
preventable risk factor. Evidence indicates that more than a
quarter of all cases of AMD are linked to current or past
exposure to smoking.

Study results appear mixed about a direct association between
smoking and diabetic retinopathy, but most experts agree that
smoking should be avoided to help help stop progression of the
disease.

Smoking causes shrinkage or constriction of blood vessels, shown
to be directly linked to rising inner eye pressure (intraocular
pressure) that can lead to glaucoma and accompanying optic nerve
damage.

Optic neuritis : A landmark study found a strong association
between factors such as poor nutrition and smoking linked to a
1992-1993 epidemic of optic nerve damage among Cuban citizens.
Although smoking is associated with several eye diseases,
including nuclear cataract and thyroid eye disease, the most
common cause of smoking related blindness is age related macular
degeneration, which results in severe irreversible loss of
central vision.

How does smoking damage the eyes?

When you inhale cigarette smoke thousands of chemicals get into
your bloodstream and can travel throughout your body. These
chemicals cause damage to the macula (the most sensitive part of
the retina, at the back of your eye). Tiny blood vessels can
burst through the macula, leading to irreversible damage, or
alternatively, the cells of the macula slowly die. Both
ultimately lead to loss of vision.

Can this damage be reversed?

No. Laser treatment can sometimes kill the new blood vessels
before they hit the macula. However, most people are not able to
be helped this way because the blood vessel has already involved
the very centre of the macula, and even after treatment, the
condition recurs in half the cases and in almost all those who
continue to smoke. A new treatment, photodynamic therapy (PDT)
may be able to help some to reduce the severity of vision loss,
but the majority of people with macular degeneration will still
not be able to be treated.

If I quit smoking will my eyes recover?

Your risk of macular degeneration will be reduced if you quit
smoking, however existing damage to the eyes cannot be repaired,
particularly once vision is affected.

Choosing Between Fixed Rates and Variable Rates

When taking out a loan, finding the lender that offers the best
interest rates is a very important step. Depending upon the loan
that you’re applying for, however, you might find that you have
to make certain decisions before you can determine which loan
offer really has the best rate. One of these important decisions
that you might have to make is whether or not you want to have
your interest at a fixed rate or at a variable rate.

Fixed and variable rates are most common when dealing with
mortgage loans, though there are other types of loans that offer
both types of interest as well. If you’re not sure which type of
interest would be best for you, or what the main differences are
between the two types, then the information presented below
might help you to make an important decision concerning your
next loan.

Fixed Rates

Fixed interest rates are rates which will not fluctuate as time
goes by, regardless of how much national interest rates may rise
or fall. They are often used as part of a promotion, with low
introductory fixed rates being replaced by either variable rates
or a higher fixed rate after six months or more have passed.
Generally, the only way to change a fixed interest rate is to
refinance the loan and get either a lower fixed rate or a
variable rate on the new loan agreement.

Variable Rates

Unlike fixed rates, variable rates fluctuate in response to
changes in national rates. When national rates increase, a
variable rate loan will also increase… but when national rates
decrease, the variable rate will do the same. Variable rates are
the most common type of interest rate, and are generally used
for small loans, credit cards, and many other types of debts. It
can be difficult to predict exactly how much you will pay in
total with variable rates, but if national interest rates stay
low then you may end up paying much less than originally
estimated.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Fixed Rates Fixed rates have
several advantages and disadvantages, and may or may not be
right for you and your loan needs. They provide security against
increases in national rates, meaning that you might end up
paying a much lower rate if you’ve locked in a lower fixed rate
than the current national rate. If national rates fall, however,
you may end up paying more than you would with a variable rate.
Promotional fixed rates are generally set low, but as they only
last for a limited amount of time you might end up paying a much
higher rate once they expire. Fixed rates can make budgeting
easier, however, due to the fact that all payments should be for
the exact same amount.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Variable Rates

Like fixed rates, variable rates have their own advantages and
disadvantages. While they can occasionally lead to lower
interest rates than their fixed counterparts, the fluctuations
of national rates will generally bring them up again before
you’ve finished repaying the loan. Variable rates can sometimes
grow to several times the rate you were originally paying in a
matter of months, though there is always the possibility of
having just as sharp of a drop as well. With variable rates most
loans will have the same monthly payments, though the number of
payments may be extended or the final payment may be a different
amount due to the fluctuating interest that has been accrued
over the loan term.

FTC Image Tarnished Over Embellishment in CAN SPAM Act Support

Once again the FTC; Federal Trade Commission has embarrassed the Department of Justice in the media, but falsely claiming that the FTC had something to do with the reduction of SPAM. First the reduction is not measurable and second the FTC did not do anything of any value. Sure they filed a few lawsuits and tried to intimidate SPAMMERS, but mostly they were so busy in public relations tooting their own horn it would be hard to actually believe that they helped.

In fact I believe that the Federal Trade Commission’s image is further tarnished over their obvious misrepresentation, trickery and embellishment of their role in the CAN SPAM Act. Should we call for a culling of that little agency with brass balls but no game, should we dismiss the FTC to the chopping block of government budget cuts and get rid of it once and for all. Should we cull it to keep its public relations tactics and purporting of lies to the American people and disgorge it from its ill-gotten gains of budgetary finance. The FTC is nothing more than a Shrill Agency to scare and strike fear into the very consumer they claim to protect. Should we not demand the heads of the Consumer Division there, which claims they helped reduce SPAM? Should we not have everyone in that Consumer Division of the FTC fired and lose their pension contributions and be de-bared if they are lawyers and put on a black list for government jobs? Well I believe we should and we should do this now. Thank you for listening to my truthful opinion and think on it.

The Perfect Wedding Ceremony

When you’re learning about something new, it’s easy to feel
overwhelmed by the sheer amount of relevant information
available. This informative article should help you focus on the
central points.

Obviously the wedding ceremony is what your big day is all
about. The vows, the Church, exchanging of rings, and of course,
the big “I do.” Here are a few ideas about ceremony etiquette
that you may want to keep in mind before walking down the aisle.

If the Church you choose has two center aisles, pick one aisle
to use as your focal point. Treat the whole wedding as though it
had only one, or use the right aisle for the processional and
the left for the recessional. That will allow all the guests to
get a nice close-up of the couple. If you choose one aisle, you
may want to consider seating guests in certain areas.

What exactly is the ruling about the Groom kissing the bride at
the altar? Ask the person performing the ceremony their opinion,
the priest or clergy. This will make sure that the decision is
in line with church practice so as not to offend anyone in
attendance.

So far, we’ve uncovered some interesting facts about wedding
ceremonies. You may decide that the following information is
even more interesting.

Some couples opt for a home wedding. This style wedding can be
just as formal as a church, but keep in mind there will be fewer
attendants.

In what order to things occur in the ceremony? Here’s a brief
overview of a typical ceremony.

The processional, involving the entering of the wedding party.
Next, follows the welcome, Call to Worship and Introduction,
typically done by the officiant. This is followed by the
questions of intent and the declaration of consent. After this,
the couple may choose some special music or readings to
personalize the ceremony, done by family and friends. Scripture
readings, congregational hymns, or solos are appropriate during
this time. The couple may choose their favorite items or
passages regarding love and commitment. After this, are the
ever-important wedding vows and the exchange of rings. Finally
we have the pronouncement of marriage (“I now pronounce you
husband and wife), and any special acts of celebration (lighting
of candles, flowers to family members, etc). The officiant will
conclude with a benediction and a presentation of the new
couple. The wedding party will the exit the chapel area during
the recessional. You can’t predict when knowing something extra
about wedding ceremonies will come in handy. If you learned
anything new about wedding ceremonies in this article, you
should file the article where you can find it again.

How I Host My New DOT-COM Domains For Free!

When it comes to selling online, one thing is certain: a small
focused website that features just one lead product will far
outsell a big website that features lots of products and links.

By focusing on just one product, you avoid distracting your
visitors or forcing them to make decisions. That way, they’ll
take the time to study your product and the chances of making a
sale are vastly increased.

I can see the evidence for this in my own business. While the
main company website (BizzyDays.com) continues to bring in a
steady stream of sales, it’s actually the individual websites
for each of the ebooks that are responsible for the lion’s share
of orders.

The problem, however, with having one website for every single
ebook is that it adds a lot of extra overheads. In general
you’re looking at minimum $100 for any kind of webhosting and
somewhere between $8 and $35 for a domain name.

These are not huge figures, but let’s face it, costs are costs
and if you’re in business you want to keep them as low as
possible.

That’s why I felt it was worth sharing with you my little
‘trick’ for setting up brand new websites for just the price of
a domain name.

This week I launched a new website for our ebook publishing
guide “You Step By Step Guide to Success On The Internet”. The
TOTAL cost to set up this new website
(http://selfpublishing-ebooks.com) was just $8.97!

So how did I manage that?

Firstly, it’s worth noting that I use an excellent hosting
service for my main website BizzyDays.com. One of the many
features they include for just $9.95/month is the ability to
create your own sub-domains (http://subdomain.domain.com).

So, the first step I took was to set up a new sub-domain (I
called it http://selfpublishingebooks.bizzydays.com). Next I
designed the website and published it to this address.

Then, I went along to http://www.DNbuy.com and bought the domain
name www.selfpublishing-ebooks.com for $8.97. The reason I
bought it at DNbuy is because they offer a whole range of domain
name services completely free (domain parking, URL re-direction,
e-mail re-direction, etc.).

Once I had the domain name, it took me just a couple of minutes
(via the DNbuy website) to set up the new domain name to point
(or re-direct) to the sub-domain I’d just created
(http://selfpublishingebooks.bizzydays.com).

I’m even able to ‘cloak’ the address shown on the browser’s
address bar, so that, even though people are surfing on
http://selfpublishingebooks.bizzydays.com what shows up on the
address bar is http://selfpublishing-ebooks.com.

Finally, DNbuy even re-directs my e-mails for free. This enables
me to create new addresses (like
sales@selfpublishing-ebooks.com) and have any messages that are
sent to these addresses re-directed to my regular e-mail address
inbox.

And that’s it! A brand new website — hosted and all — for less
than $10.

Now there’s no excuse not to create sales-focused mini-websites
for ALL your products!
