You will find a significant difference in both price and facilities between hotels and guest houses in the UK. Hotels usually offer breakfasts, lunches, teas, dinners, a licensed bar and a range of services and facilities to suit individuals, families and often business groups. Country house hotels will often add recreational facilities in their grounds such as golf, tennis, swimming, health spas, gyms and attended play areas for children. Top league international hotels in London and major cities offer comprehensive amenities and services for business and holiday guests, and a choice of first class and luxury accommodation. Guest houses may not have bars or offer lunch or teas, but will have television and sitting lounges.

In England and Wales, the AA, RAC (the largest UK motoring organisations) and the English Tourist Council have come together to provide an overall star for hotels and diamond rating for guest accommodations, including bed and breakfast. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, all tourist accommodations are also graded regularly to provide a clear indication of the level of facilities you can expect.

Bed and breakfast accommodation, advertised by the famous ‘B&B vacancies’ sign, is mostly in private homes and the emphasis is on bedrooms rather than on facilities such as a bar or restaurant. They are often the least expensive form of guest accommodation although prices vary between those in the most popular holiday locations and those offering stopovers ‘en route’.

Thousands of bed and breakfasts have been visited anonymously by tourist officers to be inspected for a diamond rating of between one and five stars. This is intended as a guide to the quality of accommodation and food on offer.

As private homes, including farmhouses and working farms, B&Bs tend to offer a very personal welcome, and an insight into British ways of life in different parts of the country. Breakfast is intended to fill you and will often include bacon, eggs, fried bread, tomatoes, even fried potatoes and local additions such as black pudding. Or you can enjoy a ‘continental’ breakfast: cereal, bread, toast, tea, coffee and juice.

Hostels

There are many hostels located all over England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Hostels vary in style and amenities but they offer bedrooms with between two and six beds for young people, families and groups. They usually provide substantial breakfasts and dinners at low prices and have communal kitchen facilities if you prefer to cater for yourself.

The main hostel organisations are the Youth Hostel Association (YHA), the Scottish Youth Hostel Association (SYHA) and Hostelling International Northern Ireland (HINI). You do not have to be a ‘youth’ to stay because there is no upper age limit (in Scotland the lower age limit is 5). But you do have to be a member of the YHA or SYHA, which involves paying a small annual membership fee. There are also a variety of independent hostels offering accommodation. Staying in hostels is traditionally popular with people pursuing backpacking, walking, cycling or generally exploring outdoor pursuits. But there are also hostels in many towns and cities, which enable members to enjoy good basic accommodation on a low budget.

You must truly want your child to succeed and be willing to put forth the time and effort it takes for your child to reach his or her potential. With these two ingredients your child may be able to realize an education that could not be achieved in a public classroom.

You, more than anyone else, want your child to reach their full potential. This is usually not possible in a crowded classroom environment. A child, to learn at their best, must have one-on-one instruction from someone who truly cares for them. And who better than you can give that to them? Public school teachers are overwhelmed by the sheer number of students they must control every day. With the many different learning styles, discipline problems, regulations that need to be followed and other factors a public school teacher cannot spend the individual time with each child that is necessary to bring out that child’s best. Home schooling can help children to blossom and bring out a child’s full potential like nothing else can.

However, with a real desire you may be able to live without luxuries that will give you the time you need to offer your child the education they deserve. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina smashed into a heavily populated part of the USA, specifically the city of New Orleans in the state of Louisiana.

The city was ruined. Over 1,100 people died.

Known as the “Crescent City”, the city of New Orleans, in the US state of Louisiana, had a population of just under half a million people, with Greater New Orleans bringing the figure up to 1.3 million. One quarter of the population was under the age of 18, according to the 2000 census, and one-third was aged under 25.

“New Orleans” is usually pronounced by locals as “Noo Aw-lins”.

It was home to some of America’s poorer citizens – more than one quarter of the population was considered to be living below the poverty line. Household income was 35% below the national average, and individual income 20% below the national level.

The US federal government has a significant presence in the area. The NASA Michoud Assembly Facility is located in the eastern portion of Orleans Parish. Lockheed-Martin also has a large manufacturing facility located in the Greater New Orleans area that produces external fuel tanks for space shuttles.

New Orleans is in the Mississippi River delta and has always had a history of flooding. The first levees were built by French prison labour around 1718 and were only three feet tall.
The founding site was a rare selection of higher ground along the flood-prone lower Mississippi. Still, much of the city is located below sea level between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain.

Despite its economic and geographical disadvantages, New Orleans was famous for being a city of entertainment and excitement, both exuberant and hedonistic. It was a genuine world-class tourist destination, attracting visitors with the annual Mardi Gras (held on the iconic Bourbon Street) and the college-level “Sugar Bowl” gridiron match. Areas of the French Quarter and Central Business District in recent years began catering to booming tourism rather than residents and local businesses. The city’s charm increased when streetcar upgrades in Canal Street were completed as recently as 2004.

The city is also world-famous for its food. Specialties include beignets, square-shaped fried pastries that are sometimes called French doughnuts (served with coffee and chicory “au lait”), Po’boy and Italian Muffaletta sandwiches, Gulf oysters on the half-shell and other seafoods, etouffee, jambalaya, gumbo, other Creole dishes, and the Monday evening favourite of red beans and rice.

Only time will tell if the desire exists to resurrect this famous city. The hurricanes, the flooding and the problem of the disappearing wetlands have not been defeated.

The Parador of Caceres is located in one of the great monumental cities of Europe. UNESCO has declared Caceres a World Heritage Site. Here in the historic section is concentrated the most impressive remaining example of medieval stonemasonry in the world. The perfectly preserved old town sits on top of a large hill rising above Plaza Mayor, and situated very near the center of the old town is the Parador Caceres.

This impressive hotel is the result of the creative refurbishment and joining of five contiguous buildings; the former palace of the Marquis of Torreorgaz and four ancestral homes of former nobles. The palace part was built around 1488 by a knight of Saint James, Don Diego Garcia de Ulloa. The other ancestral homes were built later and they’ve all been combined into a labyrinthine, yet pleasing whole.

The Parador is located on a very quiet street and provides the traveler with modern accommodations that still blend harmoniously with the medieval city beyond its walls.Try to have an evening meal at the Caceres Parador. Dining in the outside patio among orange trees on a warm summer night is a true pleasure. The cuisine here is superb, and of a variety you won’t encounter elsewhere. Try the venison with Casar cheese, or the roast kid with rosemary – both very representative of typical Extremaduran fare.

The Romans founded the city in the 1st century B.C. as Norba Caesarina. Its present name is derive from the Arabic “alcazares” meaning “fortified castles.” The old part of Caceres is encircled by an ancient stone wall. This old section of the city – the “barrio antiguo” – is definitely for walking. A car would only inhibit your explorations and present a parking nightmare.

Walking around Caceres Viejo from the Parador:

- Wandering “el casco” (the old quarter) at night is especially pleasing. It’s easy to let the mind slip into the very real illusion that you’ve stepped back five centuries in time.

- See Plaza de Santa Maria – Surrounded by old noble mansions.
– Iglesia de San Mateo

- Plaza de las Veletas – Stop into the archaeological museum there.

- The “ferias de Caceres” is a fun time to visit. It usually starts during the last week of May and for seven days, the city puts on a continuous and action-packed series of events, bullfights, parties and fireworks. Be sure to arrange accommodations at the Parador well in advance.

Interesting day trips include:

- Trujillo – Another city that is a wonderful slice out of history.

- Guadalupe – With its historically fascinating Real Monasterio de Santa Maria de Guadalupe.

- Merida – With its many Roman ruins.

The Parador of Caceres can well serve as a base for exploring Extremadura if you choose. It is no more than a couple of hours drive to any of the other captivating cities mentioned above. This is the area of Spain perhaps most reminiscent of the era of the conquistadores and the Golden Age of Spain. Basic Lesson Planning

If you use different books from different publishers, it can get a little confusing trying to figure out and remember how many lessons (or pages) per day (or week) you need to complete to finish each book by the end of the year.

First, take your teacher’s manual and see how many lessons there are. Then, divide this by the total number of school days you have in the year. Let’s say, for example, that your literature book has 122 lessons. If there are 180 days in the school year, you need to do three lessons per week to finish the book, with a few weeks needing four lessons. If your history book has 112 lessons, you will do three per week and will able to finish a little earlier than the end of the year.

Once you established this, write it down in your lesson plan book in a prominent place to serve as a reminder.

Tip #2

Calculate Percentage of Book Finished

To determine if you are “on track” to finish a book by the end of the school year, first find out how far along you are in the school calendar. For example, if you have just finished school day number 36 and you have 180 school days in the year, you have completed 20% of the school year (36 divided by 180 = 20%).

Next, determine how far you have come in each subject. To do this, take the lessons completed and divide them by the total lessons. For example, if you just finished lesson 35 in your English textbook and there are 160 lessons, you are 22% finished. If you just finished lesson six in science and there are 64 lessons, you are about 9% finished. If you’ve completed 20% of your school year, you are slightly ahead in English, but significantly behind in science.

Tip #3

Avoid Burnout

Tip #1 and Tip #2 are only guides. Becoming a slave to them will lead to homeschool burnout. Life will interfere with homeschool plans. This is part of what makes homeschooling so great–you will have many opportunities to turn real life into real lessons. Get creative: taking your neighbor to the hospital become a social studies lesson for your forth grader. Getting the oil changed in your car becomes a auto shop lesson for your teenage son. Grocery shopping becomes a math and home economics lesson for your junior high student. Setting the table is a sorting activity for your pre-schooler.

Think on your feet, and remember that learning occurs in many forms, a few of which are from textbooks.

Known to Scotsmen as the City of Granite, Aberdeen seems to be outdoing rival cities Edinburgh and Glasgow. The latter may get many more visitors to its streets and bars very year but in the office rental market Aberdeen is holding its own.

It has managed to retain most of the companies that have chosen to base themselves in the city and rental incomes are staying at a reasonable level. The modern tower blocks built to house the booming electronics industry are still occupied and these renters are staying loyal to this vibrant region. Also in demand is desk space rental, this new sector is an attractive option for freelancers and small businesses not wanting to enter into lengthy contracts or requiring full office facilities. With a population of around 200,000 Aberdeen has a busy fishing economy and oil, although currently low in value, still has a lot to contribute to the city. Instead of declining uptake on office square footage is expected to increase slightly from the previous year.

Apparently the global economic downturn has passed Aberdeen by in this market anyway, unemployment is rising and other problems do prevail. It is hard to determine the reason for the static market in the rest of Scotland perhaps fortune does favour the brave, or maybe Aberdeen is just lucky. The right type of industry arriving at the right time.

Politicians are making the most of the positive statistics showing rentals increasing by over 20%; good new is something to hang on to. If Aberdeen has the secret to retaining its new investors it won’t be sharing that information anytime soon. Let’s hope that this historic city can keep one step ahead in this vital sector.
