Intro to Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is a infrequent cancer of the tissues that line the person’s inside organs. About 2,000 new occurrences are diagnosed each year in the whole US. From this group, almost75 percent of cases involve the sac around the lungs, called the pleura. This is known as pleural mesothelioma. In almost 10 to 20 percent of cases, malignant mesothelioma may involve the tissue that surrounds abdomen organs, referred to as the peritoneal membrane, causing what is then recognized as peritoneal mesothelioma.

Being introduced to asbestos is absolutely the main risk factor for this uncommon disease. After asbestos exposure, the time period to progression of the mesothelioma disease could be 2 to 4 decades. As a result of occupation introduction, mesothelioma is about three times more likely in males, than in females. Because the amount of occurrences moves upward with your age, there are about 10 times more instances in the males more than age 64 than in the men in their thirties.

Developing Malignant mesothelioma is a weighty ailment, that, at the moment, has a very poor degree of long-term endurance. Although, if it is pinpointed quickly, regimens are then obtainable that will seriously extend the patient’s life. New therapies continue to be and are being tested through clinical trials.

Holland Travel – Amsterdam, Van Gogh, Anne Frank

Holland certainly has a reputation with travelers. Known for having a very liberal attitude on social issues such as prostitution and drugs, the reputation is not always deserved. Yes, marijuana and prostitution is legal, but there is so much more to the country. Many look at Amsterdam as Holland, but visitors know there is much more. If you desire to travel to Holland, also known as the Netherlands, don’t miss these attractions.

Amsterdam

Simply put, Amsterdam has something for everyone. The city is an incredibly beautiful collection of old world European architecture elegantly partitioned by canals. In truth, the city is built on roughly 90 small islands, although you can hardly tell. Transportation is best undertaken on foot or by bicycle. With a cool climate, you’ll barely break a sweat.

Contrary to popular opinion, Amsterdam is not just a city of liberal policies. Yes, coffee bars sell things other then just coffee. Yes, there are women in windows that are awfully friendly. Still, there is so much more to experience in the city.

Van Gogh Museum

The Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh houses the world’s largest collection of the work of Vincent van Gogh. From his early work, the museum contains 700 artistic works and 850 letters. After moving to Paris in 1886, van Gogh entered an impressionist period, of which the museum contains a large collection. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the collection is the organization. The entire collection is arranged chronologically from the first to last work. As you walk, you can clearly see the evolution of this master’s skill.

Anne Frank House

Who hasn’t read the intense diary of Anne Frank? Hiding from the Nazis, she and her family lived in an annexed section of an apartment in Amsterdam for two years. In 1957, the house was donated to the Anne Frank Foundation and turned into a museum. A visit will send chills through your spine. The museum contains films, the annexed area and the original notes of Anne Frank. A must see for anyone traveling to Amsterdam.

Beyond Amsterdam

For those needing a break from Amsterdam, there is much to be seen in Holland. If you are looking for a color explosion, consider taking the bulb cycling tour out of Noordwijk. Windmills your thing? Head to the De Zaan district to see them in action. Prefer to spend a night in a castle? Try the Castle Hotel Engelenburg, which even lets you ruin a good walk by playing golf.

Travel to Holland and you won’t regret it. Whether you want to “investigate” the countries liberal policies or simply bike through fields of tulips, Holland will satisfy.

Eating Well in Paris: First Stop at Chez Georges

When you stay in Paris for a short while, eating out at a decent, reasonably priced restaurant may become a silly game of trial and error. In this new series of articles, I will recommend several places no traveler will ever regret having tried out!

Facing the eating-out issue

When it comes eating out in Paris, travelers unfamiliar with the city may have a hard time finding the right place to eat out. Consider it this way: you are to live, breathe and eat for a short while in a city which counts over 1,500 restaurants, in a country internationally known for its exquisite food. Where do you start from? And what guarantee do you have to hit the right spots for lunch and dinner?

A large number of my American friends select to follow their favorite travel guide’s recommendations. Good thinking. But there’s a downside to it: travelers tend use the same travel guides. And too many tourists kill authenticity.

The so-called ‘French cuisine’

Being born and having lived in France for 30 some years before I found my true home in America, I have an in-bred tendency to be extremely picky when it comes to food. When I travel back to Paris, I especially dislike being served so-so cuisine at over-inflated prices.

By the same token I find it very hard to accept that any of my American friends touring Paris be served run-of-the-mill food posing as ‘French cuisine’. Hence this new series of articles.

In the course of several recent trips to the French capital, I was introduced by local friends to a few restaurants I found to be absolutely noteworthy. My first stop will be ‘Chez Georges’.

The set

‘Chez Georges’ stands out tall amongst my recent discoveries.

I had received an invitation for lunch from Philippe H., an attorney-at-law who specializes in brokering deals in record time. Philippe has been lunching at ‘Chez Georges’ for the last 20 years or so, he is a fixture of the place. He even has his own table there. A very practical state of affairs, mind you, as ‘Chez Georges’ always operates at full capacity, and one needs to book at least 48 hours in advance to get a table.

The decor is typical French 1920-30, with a mosaic floor, large mirrors on the walls, dark brown wood panels, and sandish paint. The restaurant is divided in two rooms, both very narrow. The first room features a bar and a row of small square tables. Being close to the door and window panes, it is well lit. The room in the back is larger, with two rows of tables. It’s also darker, without any windows. The (small) kitchen is situated at the back of this room, and the restrooms another step behind.

The place is obviously packed, and very busy. It smells good food, and though guests are allowed to smoke I didn’t find cigarette smoke to be an issue. The whole atmosphere is congenial, vibrant and lively. No elevator music to bother you, but your neighbors’ voices may cover yours. Very Parisian, no doubt, but I saw several American folks having lunch there.

The feat

Our party of six was soon tended by Zoe the waitress, a sight for sore eyes. This smiling brunette is married to the restaurant manager, a friendly fellow who tends the bar and the cash register. Zoe has a nice word for everyone, can explain the menu in details, recommends what’s right for you, and moves about diligently.

The menu at ‘Chez Georges’ is as varied as appetizing. Everything on it spells French tradition. We decided to order a large selection of appetizers to share, including rillettes (a sort of pate made with pork, duck or goose), pink radish, herrings, museau (beef head pate), potato salad, and other delicacies.

The goods came in generous portions, and a couple of bottles of white Sancerre helped us gulp all this down. (Sancerre is a light red or white wine. It is made from black pinot or white sauvignon, and is grown in the Touraine region.) We were served two different types of fresh bread, including a delicious Poilane bread

We then attacked the entrees: duck filet with potatoes for me, please, served pink. (In my book, duck cooked to ‘done’ is unpalatable.) Soon came the plates, full up. My duck filet was perfectly cooked, and thick and tender as it should be. A wonderful abundance of gorgeous food! We accompanied the main fares with a bottle of red Chinon, a wine grown in my hometown. Things to get damned for!

All is well that ends well

The dessert was as succulent as the rest of this hearty meal. I had a Tarte Tatin, an caramelized apple pie baked ‘upside-down’. Apple slices are first baked on sugar, then covered with dough, and put in the oven again for a short while. When baked, the pie is turned over so that the dough now supports the apples. The result is a very tender pie, with a sweet but not overpowering taste of caramel. It is served with vanilla ice.

We all finished the meal on a good espresso. The check was very reasonable: it came to about 60 USD per person, for an unforgettable meal that included a ton of appetizers, six main fares, seven servings of dessert, 3 bottles of wine, and espressos for everyone. Expect to pay USD 30 on a lighter fare and less wine.

Though very hearty, my meal was easy to digest. I didn’t feel bloated afterwards, just slightly tipsy thanks to multiple servings of light wine. The products used were of very good quality, the bread freshly baked. The service we received was diligent and friendly.

Definitely a place I recommend you, my traveling friends!

How To Prevent Holiday Accidents

The holidays are the worst season for accidents. Ironically, corporate Christmas parties are one of the biggest causes of accidents, in the sense that they push drunk people into cars and onto the streets. Therefore, it helps the business if it takes basic precautions to stop wannabe accidents from leaving the building.

It seems that no one can top people from drinking at Christmas parties, and it only creates a nasty situation when you suggest that they drink less. You can limit the number of drinks, but people somehow manage to drink more. You can unofficially discourage drinking, but it’s jut better to find other ways to deal with it.

The most basic way is to offer some sort of incentive to designated drivers, those that are willing drink sodas, water and fruit juice, and then drive drunks home after the party. These incentives can take the form of gift cards or actual gifts, but remember that they took on the extra responsibility when it comes time for promotions. These are definitely people that you want to encourage, so make it a point to find a way.

Another idea is to allow them to stay where they drop. It’s not the most orderly of things to do, but if you have a large building, then designate a room or two as sleeping rooms, and encourage people to bring sleeping bags an bedrolls if they plan on getting drunk. Point out that it’s not a hotel, but that it’s there for anyone who needs it. If nothing else, it will discourage people from driving home drunk, which is what you are trying to discourage in the first place. If you decide to hold the party at a home, the same can be accomplished by designating a common room.

A variation of the above is to hold it at someone’s house or a hotel, where rooms are easily available. Besides having someone else clean up the mess, this makes you feel better because you know that an option is available, and the hotel may offer a group rate discount. It also encourages the hotel to reserve the space for you again next year. (Bear in mind that most hotels have a dry spell around the holidays, unless they are in tourist hotspots.)

There are basic ways to stop drinking, by the way. The most basic of these is to allow just one drink; just don’t toast too often. You can also use some sort of stamp or token system, but be aware that stamps can be washed off and that tokens be traded. There are other ways, but they depend on personal honor, which seems to evaporate like cheap beer around alcohol.

As the idea is to keep your employees safe; if something happens to them, then you have to pay for training their replacement, and your insurance carrier needs to take care of their bills. By taking care of your workers, you save money. That, and you show that you honestly like them. Which is always worth it in the end.

Your Travel and Holiday Money Options

With summer finally getting into full swing, many of us will be looking forward to travelling abroad for a well earned holiday. Of course, you’ll need access to cash while you’re away, so what are the best and safest ways of arranging your travel money?
1) Local Currency
It’s a good idea to take a small amount of local currency with you whenever you travel, if only enough to last you for your first few hours. You’ll probably need to arrange travel from the airport to your hotel for example, and local currency is the easiest way to pay for these initial expenses. The exchange rates charged at airports are notoriously expensive, so buy some currency before you leave and you’ll get a much better deal.
The drawback to carrying currency is that if it gets lost or stolen, it can’t be replaced. For this reason it’s best to use another form of travel money for most of your funds.
2) Travellers Cheques
These are the traditional way of carrying money abroad. When you buy the cheques, which can be in Sterling, Euros or US Dollars, you have to sign the stub of each cheque in the presence of the teller. Once abroad, you can convert the cheques into local currency by signing the other half of the cheque at a currency exchange, where the teller will compare the two signatures and also inspect your passport.
This system is more secure than cash as each cheque is uniquely numbered, so if a cheque goes missing it can be quickly cancelled and replaced by the cheque issuer. There is a drawback in that you have to cash the cheques at a currency exchange, and you might not find one offering a good exchange rate.
3) Credit Cards
Credit cards are accepted virtually the world over, and may seem a good way of paying your way while abroad. As well as using them for shopping, they can be used to pay restaurant bills and even to withdraw cash. Before choosing this as your travel money option though, check your card’s small print to see what interest rate is charged on overseas use – it will probably be higher than the standard rate of your card, and you’ll probably have to pay exchange charges too.
4) Cash Machines
There are now several international cash machine networks in operation, for example the Cirrus network, and it’s likely that your cash card can be used internationally, especially in Europe and the USA. This is a good way of financing your holiday spending, as you can draw out what you need while keeping the rest of your money safe in your normal bank account. The downside is that you may have to pay a fee for each withdrawal, and the exchange rate you’re charged may not be the best available.
5) Prepaid Cards
These are a relatively new kind of plastic card, which are used in much the same way as credit or debit cards, with the big difference that you have to ‘load’ the card with funds before you can spend with it. They are a secure way of carrying money, as the card is replaceable if lost, and as it can only be used in conjunction with a PIN number then even if stolen it’s difficult for a thief to make use of it. There will, however, still be exchange commissions payable when you use the card, and also usually a flat fee for cash withdrawals.
The main thing to bear in mind with travel money is that while each of the above options is useful, not all are suitable for use everywhere in the world. The best advice is not to rely on a single kind of travel money, but to take a sensible mixture of cash, local currency, and plastic or cheques, to make sure you can always get local currency when you need it. Enjoy your holiday!

A Brief History Of Norwich England

Norwich is situated on the South East of England in the East Anglia region. This is typically the flattest area of the British Isles and is flooded with history. East Anglia or East Angles as it was known then, was originally believed to be founded by north and south folk coming together around 520AD.

By the time of the battle of Hastings in 1066, Norwich had become one of the largest towns in Britain, now occupied by Saxons, Scandinavians and Normans, it was so important, it even had its own mint. However soon after, Anglo-saxon homes were being destroyed to make way for a fortress that would tower above the town, the intial wood version was finished in 1075AD.

1096 saw the work beginning on what now is the famous Norwich Cathedral and by 1194, Norwich was granted the status of a city by Richard 1st.

By the early 1300s a wall was now encircling the town with twelve gates, which was a good way to collect tolls as people entered and left. As time moved on, about 30 thousand people were now living within these flint walls.
By the middle 1300s the castle was starting to be neglected and so became a jail, where prisoners lived in appalling conditions.

In 1349 the “Black Death” reached Norwich city where its though 2 fifths of the population died, including a lot of clergymen. Churches suffered from the lack of these priests.

One of the most important trades for centuries within this area was weaving and by the 1600s many different yarns and wools were being used and transported from different parts of the country to satisfy demand. It was now being exported all over the world, and as farm workers moved into the city, to escape low agricultural wages, Norwich then became what is believed to be the largest town in the British Isles.

The population grew massively during the 1800s and so more and more people started to move out side the walls. As transport improved throughout the country, the train network arrived at Norwich. By this time the textile industry has expanded into leather goods but was also being forced to adapt to outside forces such as relevant wars the fashion industry and improved transport threw pressure on the weavers.

New industries now also started to appear including soap manufacturers, iron foundries and a brewery.

By 1901 Norwich had a population of 111,773 and then a building boom between the wars saw over 1000 houses a year being built. During the Second World War, Norwich was selected for bombing because of its history and historic buildings and was bomber over 40 times.

Today much of Norwich city history still stands with its castles, churches and the now famous cathedral is still there for you to enjoy. There are also many museums showing exhibits and representing how the people of Norwich used to live,

If you are interested in the history of the British Isles, Norwich must be a consideration for you to study as it played such a large part of the English culture and foundations.
