For people who want to know how to organize a garage, here are some tips:

1. Organize as You Go

Don’t move the pile from the garage out into your yard or driveway. Organize your belongings as you go, so you don’t have to work through the same pile again. Create a few categories and group the items that way: sports gear, automotive tools, yard tools, domestic items (inside), paint/craft supplies and so on.

2. Store the Items

Once you have the items grouped, store them in plastic bins. Mark the bins, either with a numbering or lettering system, or by marking them “Sports Gear” and “Yard Supplies” and by the other categories you’ve created. Simply write on them with a Sharpie.

3. Shelve Anything That’s Toxic

If you have toxins and poisons in your garage, make certain to build or install shelves and then place the toxic substances as high on the shelf as possible. Get these toxins out of the reach of your children and the neighbors’ children. Make certain no kiddos can touch the dangerous items in your garage.

4. Have a Yard Sale or Goodwill Giveaway

If you have a lot of undamaged household items you don’t want, but that are in good shape, organize a yard sale. There’s no reason to let good stuff go to waste, so collect everything in your garage, add to it unwanted items from your attic and throughout your house and have a yard sale.

Recycle your unused items by having a garage sale or taking your unbroken items to Goodwill. Many of these household belongings are perfectly good: you just don’t have room for them. So instead of taking them to the dump or landfill, give them away or sell them for a small amount.
