The issue of internet piracy, which has been hitting headlines frequently since the introduction of Britain’s digital initiatives to curtail such activities, has once more come into the spotlight. The top players of the entertainment industry have made another plea to bring in more stringent legal provisions to help control such activities among the online public.

A committee formed by members of the industry called the ‘European Audiovisual Social Dialogue Committee’ has made a fresh appeal to those in power to formulate guidelines which will provide for serious action to be taken against those violating copyrights by means of sharing protected material or distributing such material online in an unauthorised manner. The plea has come from those in the entertainment industry, such as music, movies and TV, which are the ones which are most affected by this issue. Every year, millions are lost due to illegal downloads and piracy which occurs over the internet.

The UK Government reacted to these appeals earlier by introducing certain provisions in the Digital Economy Bill to help fight internet piracy. However, the entertainment industry feels that more structural changes are required in the entire legal system of the European Union to place an effective muzzle on such illegal activities.

A statement issued by the Committee stated that the European Commission and other institutions must acknowledge the serious repercussions of such misuse of internet tools. The statement has asked for the Internal Markets Commissioner to ensure that member nations and ISPs are willing and able to enforce necessary restrictions and regulations on users. This appeal comes on the heels of Lord Mandelson’s proposed internet piracy rules which allow for suspension of user accounts after warnings have failed to take effect.
