After a storm with hail literally the size of golf balls damaged most of the buildings in Casper, Wyoming in 1978, local contractors couldnt keep up with insurance company demand for repair work. Two brothers, Lee and Larry Judson, saw an opportunity to take their construction skills on the road to help out and make a little money. They ended up mastering exterior renovations and forming K-Designers. K-Designers is now one of the biggest exterior remodeling firms in the western United States.
Building a nationwide brand was never part of the siblings agenda. K-Designers grew by doing one thingexterior improvementsand doing it exceptionally well. The firm now has over 900 staff in 11 locations serving 18 states. K-Designers success has been based on having a clear focus, systematic processes and strong relationships with manufacturers. For most of its early history, K-Designers did one thingsidingand did it well. Gradually they added replacement windows and exterior doors.
Turning K-Designers into a national brand wasnt what the two had in mind, but thats what happened. It was the result of having a clear focus, well-organized systems and strong relationships with manufacturers. The companys growth enabled them to have better pricing and service from manufacturers, and today everything they buy, down to the nails, is direct from the manufacturer. The result is attractive, cost effective work.
“The whole design team was wonderful. From our sales associate to the installer, the transition from the old to the new went off without a hitch”, says Teresa OLoughlin, a Portland, OR homeowner who hired K-Designers to install new living room windows. “This is the second career K-Designers has done for us and we will continue to use them as long as we keep upgrading our home”, she says.
K-Designers plans to continue to mature, even as the rest of the construction field is contracting. As always, maturation is tightly focused on exterior improvements, with plans to acquire firms in new markets, broaden the product line geographically and reach out to previous customers.
